Vatican II and Cremation
Since Vatican II, the Catholic Church permits cremation, provided it is not chosen in rejection of Christian beliefs. Cremated remains must be reverently buried or entombed, not scattered or kept at home.
Funeral Mass
The Church prefers that the Funeral Mass be celebrated with the body present, prior to cremation. However, when cremation takes place beforehand due to timing or personal circumstances, a Funeral Mass with the cremated remains is still fully permitted and remains a sacred and meaningful liturgy.
